What Counts as an AC Emergency in South Florida?

Some faults need someone today. Others genuinely can wait until morning and cost less if they do. Knowing which is which saves money and, occasionally, more than that.

Shut it off now, then call

These are not wait-and-see:

  • Burning or hot-electrical smell. Kill power at the breaker. Do not restart it to “check”.
  • Smoke, sparking, or scorch marks at the unit or disconnect.
  • A breaker that trips again immediately after a reset. Leave it off. It is protecting you from a real fault.
  • Water actively running through a ceiling. Switch the system off — that stops it producing more — and contain what you can.
  • A rotten-egg smell. Leave the house and call your gas utility first; that is not an AC call.

Urgent because of who is in the house

This is the category people underplay. In a South Florida summer an indoor temperature climbing through the 80s is a health matter, not a comfort matter, when the household includes an elderly resident, an infant, someone pregnant, or anyone with a heart, respiratory or medication-related vulnerability to heat.

Say so explicitly when you call. It changes how the call is triaged. Airo Service puts overheating homes ahead of routine appointments and aims to attend same day.

Can usually wait until morning

  • One room warmer than the rest, house otherwise comfortable.
  • Higher bill than expected.
  • A musty smell with normal cooling.
  • A rattle or vibration that is not new.
  • Cooling that is adequate but slower than it used to be.
  • A thermostat you can work around.

These are real problems worth fixing. They are not worth paying a premium to fix at 9pm.

The grey zone

No cooling at all, in a healthy household, on a night that is not extreme: this is where judgement applies. Overnight temperatures in South Florida rarely make an unairconditioned house dangerous for a healthy adult, and waiting until morning is often both safe and cheaper. Do the safe checks — thermostat, both breakers, filter, drain pan and float switch — and if nothing obvious turns up, book first thing.

Making the wait bearable

Close blinds on the sun side, run ceiling fans only in rooms people are actually in, avoid the oven, shut doors to concentrate what cooling you have, and drink more water than feels necessary. If the house has become genuinely hot, spending the evening somewhere air-conditioned is a legitimate answer.

What to have ready

System age if you know it, what changed and when, whether the breaker tripped, whether there is ice or water anywhere, whether the outdoor fan spins, and what you have already tried. It genuinely shortens the visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is no air conditioning an emergency in Florida?

It depends on the household. For a healthy adult on an ordinary night it can usually wait until morning and costs less that way. It is urgent when the house includes an elderly resident, an infant, someone pregnant, or anyone with a heat-related medical vulnerability — say so when you call.

What AC problems need immediate attention?

A burning or hot-electrical smell, smoke or sparking, a breaker that trips again right after a reset, and water actively running through a ceiling. Shut the system off at the breaker first, then call. A rotten-egg smell means leave and call the gas utility.

Should I keep resetting a breaker that trips?

No. Reset it once. If it trips again immediately, leave it off — it is protecting you from a genuine electrical fault, and each reset pushes another surge through equipment that may already be damaged.

Does Airo Service offer 24/7 emergency service?

No — Airo does not staff a round-the-clock desk. Overheating homes are triaged ahead of routine appointments and attended same day where scheduling allows. If the situation is a safety emergency, shut the system off at the breaker and call emergency services or your utility as appropriate.

How can I stay cool while waiting for a technician?

Close blinds on the sun side, run ceiling fans only where people are, avoid using the oven, and shut interior doors to concentrate the cooling you have. Drink more water than feels necessary, and if the house is genuinely hot, spend the evening somewhere air-conditioned.
