After the Hottest Summer on Record, Airo Service Warns of a Delayed Wave of AC Failures

Airo Service is advising South Florida homeowners that the region’s record-breaking 2026 cooling season has left a large number of air conditioning systems mechanically stressed but still running — and that failures from a summer like this one typically surface in the weeks after the heat breaks, not during it.

What the season actually measured

Summer 2026 was the hottest on record in parts of South Florida. Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach recorded their hottest meteorological summers ever measured, while Miami tied its own record.

On 18 August 2026, Miami officially reached 100°F — tying the hottest temperature ever recorded there. Miami weather records go back to 1895, and the only previous 100°F reading came on 21 July 1942. That record had stood for 84 years.

The count of hot days matters more to equipment than any single peak. Miami logged 83 days at or above 90°F against a normal year’s 64. Fort Lauderdale recorded 78, close to double its normal. West Palm Beach saw 81 against a normal of 55. Heat index values regularly ran between 105 and 112°F.

Why the failures come later

“A compressor does not usually fail on the hottest day,” said Roman Shatokhin, Founder of Airo Service. “It fails six weeks later on an ordinary afternoon, because the hottest day is what wore it out. People assume that if the system got them through August, it is fine. That is exactly the assumption that costs them in October.”

A cooling season of this length runs equipment far beyond its design duty cycle. The wear is cumulative and mostly invisible: capacitors degrade, contactor points pit and burn, motor bearings dry, refrigerant charge drifts as small leaks widen under sustained pressure, and coils foul faster because the blower simply ran more hours.

What Airo Service recommends checking now

• Capacitor value under load. A capacitor reading below its rated tolerance will still start the system in mild weather and fail in the next heat event.
• Contactor condition. Burned or pitted contacts are one of the most common post-season findings and one of the cheapest to correct.
• Refrigerant charge, measured properly. Superheat and subcooling, not a guess from pressure alone. A charge that drifted over a long season points to a leak worth locating.
• The condensate drain. A season of maximum runtime means maximum moisture removal, and the biofilm that grows in that pan is what blocks the line.
• Coil cleanliness. More run hours means more air pulled across the coil, and a fouled coil raises head pressure on every future cycle.

The context most homeowners miss

Rainfall across South Florida ran five to fifteen inches below normal, placing many locations among the ten driest summers on record. For coastal properties that matters directly: rain is what rinses accumulated salt off an outdoor coil, and a dry summer means a season of salt left in place on equipment that was also running harder than usual.

Airo Service recommends that homes within roughly three miles of the coast have condenser coils professionally cleaned this autumn rather than waiting for the usual spring interval.
