Why Your Electric Bill Spikes in August in South Florida
It is rarely the rate. It is run hours, humidity and a system working harder than it did in June — and most of it is measurable.

Cooling is most of your summer bill
For the majority of South Florida homes, air conditioning is the single largest item on the summer electric bill — usually by a wide margin. That means a bill that jumps in August is almost always a story about the AC, not about lights, appliances or the rate card.
August is where three things stack up at once: the highest sustained outdoor temperatures of the year, the highest humidity, and the longest daily run times. Your system is not just working more hours, it is working harder in each of them.

Why humidity costs real money
Your AC does two jobs: it lowers air temperature, and it removes moisture. The second job consumes a surprising share of the energy, and in August the moisture load is at its peak. The same house at the same thermostat setting genuinely costs more to cool in August than in April, because the air arriving at the coil is carrying far more water.
This is why comparing your August bill to your April bill and concluding something is broken can send you chasing a fault that does not exist. Compare August to last August instead. That is the number that tells you whether something changed.
The faults that quietly raise it
If this August is meaningfully worse than last August, these are the usual suspects, roughly in order of how often we find them:
- A dirty condenser coil. The outdoor coil rejects heat. Coat it in dust, grass clippings and coastal salt and head pressure rises, capacity falls and current draw goes up. You lose cooling and pay more for what is left.
- A loaded filter. Restricted airflow means less capacity and longer run times for the same result.
- Low refrigerant charge. Refrigerant is not consumed — if it is low, it leaked. A system running undercharged runs constantly and still struggles.
- Duct leakage. Ducts in a hot attic that leak conditioned air into the attic are paying to cool a space nobody lives in. In older South Florida homes this is common and often significant.
- An ageing system. Efficiency drifts down over the years. A fifteen-year-old unit is not delivering what it did when new, even if it is still cooling.
What to check before you call anyone
- Is the filter clean? Replace it and see.
- Is the outdoor unit clear of hedges, fence panels and stored items, with at least a couple of feet of breathing room?
- Has anything changed in the house — someone home during the day, a new fridge or freezer in the garage, a pool pump running longer?
- Is the thermostat set where you think it is? Programmable schedules get overridden and forgotten.

What is worth spending money on
In rough order of return for a South Florida home: get the coils cleaned and the system properly serviced; seal duct leakage if you have it; add attic insulation if you are short; and only then consider replacing equipment. Replacing a system that is being strangled by leaky ducts just buys you an efficient machine with the same losses attached.
If your system is genuinely near end of life, the efficiency gap between a fifteen-year-old unit and a modern high-SEER2 inverter system is large enough here to matter — but that is a decision worth making on measured evidence, not on one alarming bill.
