Is an AC Maintenance Plan Worth It in Florida? An Honest Look
We sell these, so read this with that in mind. Here is the arithmetic, including the cases where the answer is no.

What is normally in a plan
Most HVAC maintenance plans in this market bundle roughly the same things:
- Two visits a year — a pre-season check and a second visit later in the year.
- Priority scheduling when you have a breakdown. In July, this is worth more than it sounds.
- A discount on repairs — commonly 10–20%.
- Reduced or waived diagnostic fee on service calls.
- Records kept of what was found and done — useful for warranty claims.
- Sometimes filters, and sometimes a small discount toward replacement.

The arithmetic
Compare the plan price against what you would otherwise pay for two tune-ups at standard rates. In South Florida, where a single tune-up commonly runs $90 to $200, two visits alone often approach or exceed a typical annual plan price. Whether it clears is straightforward to check — ask what a plan costs, ask what two individual visits cost, and compare.
Where plans earn their keep beyond that is on the repair discount and the priority slot. One mid-size repair in a year usually makes the difference clear, and priority scheduling during a South Florida August is a genuine, if unquantifiable, benefit.
When the answer is yes
- You have more than one system. Multi-system homes usually see the clearest benefit, since per-system plan pricing is typically lower than per-system individual visits.
- Your system is over about seven years old. This is when parts start needing attention and the repair discount begins to matter.
- You live near the coast. Salt air is hard on outdoor equipment and the twice-yearly coil attention is worth having — see salt-air maintenance.
- You would otherwise forget. This is the honest reason most plans pay for themselves. A plan converts maintenance from a decision you have to make into an appointment someone calls you about — and the difference between annual maintenance and none is far bigger than the difference between paying per visit or by plan.
- You rent the property out. Scheduled visits and a record of them are worth a great deal when you are not the one noticing that the drain is slow.
- You want the warranty defence. Manufacturers can deny claims for lack of maintenance. Dated records are the practical protection.
When the answer is no — and we will say so
- Your system is brand new and still within its first year or two. Many installations include the first year of maintenance. Do not buy something twice.
- Your system is at the end of its life. If it is fourteen years old and you are replacing it within a year, a plan does not change that timeline. Put the money toward the replacement — see the repair-vs-replace calculator.
- You genuinely do book maintenance yourself every year. If you are disciplined and you have one modest system, paying per visit is fine and the difference is small.
- The plan is vague about what is included. A plan that will not publish its checklist is selling a subscription rather than a service.
What to check before signing any plan
- The checklist. Two visits of what, exactly? Compare against what a real tune-up includes.
- Auto-renewal terms and how to cancel.
- Whether the discount applies to parts, labour, or both.
- Whether unused visits roll over or are simply lost.
- Whether the plan transfers if you sell the house.
- What “priority” means in practice during a heat wave — ask for a realistic answer, not a marketing one.
- Whether the diagnostic fee is waived or reduced, and by how much.
The part that actually matters
Whether or not you buy a plan, get the maintenance done. In this climate the systems that fail early are almost always the ones whose condenser coil was never cleaned and whose condensate line was never flushed. A plan is a mechanism for making that happen reliably, and that is its real value — not the discount.
If you would rather just book a visit, that is a perfectly good answer too. Our current plan details and pricing are on the maintenance plan page, and single visits are on the tune-up page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are HVAC maintenance plans worth the money?
For most South Florida homes, yes — particularly with multiple systems, a system over about seven years old, or a coastal property. Two individual tune-ups at market rates often cost close to a typical annual plan on their own, before the repair discount and priority scheduling are counted.
What is usually included in an AC maintenance plan?
Two scheduled visits a year, priority scheduling during breakdowns, a discount on repairs of roughly 10 to 20 percent, a reduced or waived diagnostic fee, and maintained service records. Some plans add filters or a credit toward replacement.
When is a maintenance plan not worth it?
When the system is new and still covered by an installation-year maintenance offer, when it is near the end of its life and due for replacement anyway, or when you reliably book annual maintenance yourself on a single modest system. A plan that will not publish its checklist is also worth declining.
Does a maintenance plan help with warranty claims?
It helps considerably. Manufacturers can deny claims where failure is attributed to neglect, and a plan produces dated records of what was inspected and done. That documentation is the practical defence against a lack-of-maintenance denial.
How often does an air conditioner need servicing in South Florida?
Twice a year suits most homes here because equipment runs close to year-round with no real off-season. Once a year before cooling season is the minimum, and coastal properties benefit from more frequent attention to the outdoor coil.
