Hurricane-Season AC Prep Checklist
A little prep protects your condenser from storm damage — and knowing when NOT to restart it can save the compressor.

To protect your AC during South Florida hurricane season, secure or strap the outdoor condenser, install a surge protector, clear loose debris nearby, and shut the system off at the breaker before the storm hits. After the storm, never restart a flooded unit — have it inspected first. Call (305) 846-0155.
Before the storm
- Turn the AC off at the breaker as the storm approaches — power surges and flooding are the biggest risks.
- Secure the outdoor unit — hurricane straps or tie-downs help keep the condenser in place.
- Clear the area — remove loose items, branches and debris that could become projectiles.
- Install a surge protector — protects the compressor and control board from lightning and grid surges.
- Don't cover the unit while running — only cover it when it's off, and remove the cover before restarting.
After the storm
- Inspect before restarting — look for flooding, debris, or a shifted unit.
- If it was underwater, don't turn it on — a flooded system needs professional inspection to avoid electrical and compressor damage.
- Check the breaker and thermostat before assuming the unit failed.
- Book a post-storm inspection if anything seems off.
A quick AC tune-up before June is the best prep of all, and if your system takes storm damage, our AC repair team can get you cool again fast.
