Airo Service on Refrigerant Costs: Why the Repair-or-Replace Maths Changed

Airo Service is providing South Florida homeowners with a technical explanation of why air conditioning repair estimates involving refrigerant have risen sharply, noting that the industry is absorbing cost pressure at both ends of a refrigerant transition and that the effect materially changes when a repair still makes financial sense.

The two-sided squeeze

Manufacturers stopped building R-410A residential equipment as of January 2025, and new systems ship with R-454B. That leaves a very large installed base of R-410A systems in South Florida drawing on a supply that is winding down, while the replacement refrigerant went through its own supply and pricing turbulence.

On the R-454B side, Honeywell announced a 42 percent surcharge on orders placed on or after 15 February 2025, followed by a $4 per pound base price increase effective 9 April 2025. Chemours implemented a $2.85 per pound increase on orders shipping from 1 May 2025. Cylinder supply, rather than the chemical itself, was the persistent bottleneck, and reported pricing ranged from roughly $17 to $20 per pound at the low end to as high as $60 per pound in tight markets. Industry distributors have since described the acute shortage as resolved.

What it means at the kitchen table

“A refrigerant leak used to be an annoying repair. Now it is a decision,” said Roman Shatokhin, Founder of Airo Service. “A three-ton system holds eight to twelve pounds. When you multiply that by current pricing and add a coil, you are often looking at a number that competes with a share of a new system. The honest thing is to put both numbers in front of the customer instead of just fixing it and moving on.”

Airo Service notes that an R-410A system cannot be converted to R-454B. There is no retrofit, and any contractor proposing one should be declined.

What Airo Service tells customers to demand

• The leak located, not just the charge topped up. Refrigerant is not consumed; a system that is low has leaked. An annual top-up habit is now genuinely expensive as well as environmentally poor practice.
• Both numbers, side by side. Cost to repair and cost to replace, on the same page.
• The system’s refrigerant and age stated plainly, taken from the data plate.
• Charge weighed in after repair, verified with superheat and subcooling rather than pressure alone.

Where the line generally falls

Airo Service does not publish a universal rule, noting that the decision depends on the age of the equipment, the location of the leak, the condition of the ductwork and how long the owner intends to keep the property. As a general observation, a refrigerant-side repair on equipment in the second half of its service life increasingly warrants a replacement quote alongside it — not as a sales tactic, but because the arithmetic has genuinely moved.
