Airo Service on August Peak Demand: Why Bills Jump and Systems Fail in the Same Month

August combines the year’s highest temperatures, peak humidity and the longest run hours — and it is when marginal systems stop being marginal.

Airo Service reports that August consistently produces the year’s highest volume of residential air conditioning failures across South Florida, and is advising homeowners on what the pattern means for both reliability and cost.

Three loads arriving together

August stacks the year’s highest sustained outdoor temperatures, its peak humidity and its longest daily run times onto the same equipment. A system is not merely running more hours; each of those hours is harder work, because the air arriving at the coil carries substantially more moisture than in spring.

Since cooling is typically the largest single item on a South Florida summer electric bill, the same house at the same thermostat setting genuinely costs more to cool in August than in April. Airo Service advises homeowners comparing bills to compare August against the previous August rather than against spring, which is the comparison that reveals whether something has actually changed.

Why failures cluster now

“August does not break healthy systems,” said Roman Shatokhin, Founder of Airo Service. “It finds the ones that were already compromised. A coil that has not been cleaned in three years, a charge that has been slightly low since spring, a drain that has been half blocked for weeks — those survive June and give up in August.”

The most common August faults the company sees are condensate drain blockages triggering float-switch shutdowns, capacitor failures on units running near-continuously, frozen evaporator coils caused by restricted airflow, and compressors that fail after months of running against a fouled condenser coil.

What homeowners can do now

  • Replace the air filter and check it monthly through the rest of the season.
  • Clear at least two feet of space around the outdoor unit — hedges, fence panels and stored items restrict the airflow needed to reject heat.
  • Check for steady dripping at the outdoor condensate stub on humid days. No drip suggests a developing blockage.
  • Use a setback of a few degrees rather than switching the system off entirely while out; in this humidity, a full shutdown means the house reabsorbs moisture that takes hours to remove.
  • Set the fan to AUTO, not ON. Continuous fan re-evaporates condensed moisture off the coil back into the house.
