AC Repair Cost in South Florida: What Each Common Job Actually Runs
Real ranges by part, why two quotes for the same fault differ, and how to tell a fair repair quote from a padded one.

How much does AC repair cost in South Florida?
Most AC repairs in South Florida cost $150 to $650, and the diagnostic is $0 when you approve the repair. The common electrical faults — capacitor, contactor, relay — sit at the bottom of that band. A compressor is the outlier that can reach $3,500, which is usually the point where replacement enters the conversation.
Below is what each job actually runs, what makes one quote differ from another for the same fault, and the questions that separate a fair quote from a padded one. This is the repair half of our South Florida AC cost guide.

AC repair prices by job
These are the ranges we quote from. Your exact number is confirmed in writing before anything is touched — that is what we mean by $0 surprise fees.
| Repair | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic, with repair | $0 |
| Condensate drain clearing | $95–$250 |
| Capacitor replacement | $150–$350 |
| Contactor / relay | $150–$350 |
| Thermostat replacement | $150–$400 |
| Refrigerant recharge (R-410A) | $250–$650 |
| Condenser fan motor | $300–$650 |
| Blower motor replacement | $400–$900 |
| Evaporator coil replacement | $900–$2,500 |

Ranges are for planning. See AC repair for what a visit includes.
Why two quotes for the same fault come out different
The spread on an identical repair almost always comes from four things: part quality, whether the underlying cause was diagnosed or only the symptom, warranty on the work, and whether the trip and diagnostic are folded into the price.
- Part grade. A generic capacitor and an OEM one are not the same component, and the cheap one is the reason some houses need the same repair twice in two summers.
- Symptom versus cause. Topping up refrigerant on a system with a leak is not a repair, it is a delay. The honest version finds the leak, prices it, and tells you if the system is worth it.
- Warranty on labour. Ask what happens if the same part fails in three months. If the answer is vague, that is part of why the quote was low.
- Diagnostic and trip charges. Some quotes exclude them and add them on the invoice. Ours is $0 when you proceed with the repair.
When repair stops making sense
Our working rule: if the repair costs more than about a third of a replacement and the system is past ten years old, replacement is usually the better spend. Under ten years with a minor fault, we fix it and say so.
| Situation | Usual call |
|---|---|
| Under 10 yrs, minor fault | Repair |
| Under 10 yrs, compressor | Run both |
| Over 10 yrs, major part | Replace |
| R-22 system, any leak | Replace |
| Third repair in 2 yrs | Replace |
R-22 is the one that catches people out: the refrigerant is phased out, so recharging an R-22 system is expensive and temporary. Put your own numbers into the repair-or-replace calculator, and see what a replacement costs before deciding.
What a fair repair quote looks like
A fair quote names the failed part, the price for that part fitted, and what happens if it fails again — in writing, before work starts. Four questions get you there with any contractor:
- What exactly failed, and what caused it to fail?
- What is the price fitted, including the diagnostic and the trip?
- What is the warranty on the part, and separately on the labour?
- If this system is near the end, what would you do in my position?
A contractor who will not answer the fourth question honestly is the one to be careful with. Regular maintenance is what keeps most of these calls in the $150 band instead of the $1,800 one.
Paying for an unplanned repair
A repair that lands at a bad moment can go on $0-down, 0% financing for up to 60 months on approved credit, the same as a full system. Most repairs are small enough not to need it — but a compressor or coil at $1,800–$3,500 is a different conversation, and spreading it beats putting off a fix that is only going to get worse. AC Repair Cost — FAQ
How do I know if an AC repair quote is fair?
Compare it against the range for that specific part rather than against another company's total. A capacitor is $150–$350 fitted, a drain clearing $95–$250, a compressor $1,800–$3,500. If a quote sits well above the band, ask what else is included; if it sits well below, ask about part grade and labour warranty. A fair quote names the failed part, the fitted price, and the warranty, in writing, before work begins.
Is it worth repairing an AC that is 12 years old?
It depends on the repair. A $200 capacitor on a 12-year-old system that has otherwise run well is worth doing. A $2,000 coil or compressor on the same system usually is not, because you are spending a third of a replacement on equipment near the end of its service life in a climate that runs it close to year-round. Our rule of thumb is that repair costs above about a third of replacement, on a system past ten years, point to replacement.
Should I get a second opinion on an AC repair quote?
Yes, on anything above roughly $1,000 or on any recommendation to replace the whole system. On small electrical repairs a second opinion usually costs more in lost cooling time than it saves. When you do get one, ask both contractors the same question — what failed and why — because two different diagnoses matter far more than two different prices.
Do after-hours AC repairs cost more in South Florida?
Emergency and after-hours work carries a premium across the industry, which is one reason a no-cool call at 9pm costs more than the same fault at 9am. Airo Service offers same-day service and holds emergency slots open through the summer peak, so in most cases you are choosing between today and tonight rather than tonight and next week. The written price comes before the work either way.
What is the most expensive part to replace on an AC?
The compressor, at $1,800–$3,500 fitted, followed by the evaporator coil at $900–$2,500. Both are the point at which the repair-or-replace maths genuinely changes, because together they represent a large share of what the equipment is worth. If either fails on a system past ten years old, price a replacement alongside the repair before deciding.
Why is my AC repair quote higher than the online average?
National averages are built from a mix of climates where systems run a fraction of the hours ours do, and they rarely say whether the figure includes the diagnostic, the trip, the part grade or any labour warranty. South Florida also carries real cost differences: coastal corrosion, year-round run hours and permit requirements on larger work. Compare the quote against local ranges for the specific part, and against what is actually included.
