Cool but Clammy: Why Your AC Is Not Controlling Humidity

If the thermostat says 74 and the house still feels sticky, the problem is usually that your system is too big — not too small.

The counter-intuitive cause

Almost everyone assumes a humid house means the AC is too small. In South Florida the opposite is usually true.

Your air conditioner removes moisture only while it is actually running. An oversized system cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off — long before it has pulled much water out of the house. You get short, powerful bursts of cold air and a house that stays damp. Undersize it and you get the opposite problem, but oversizing is far more common, because for decades systems were specified by rule of thumb rather than by load calculation.

What indoor humidity should be

A comfortable target for a South Florida home is roughly 45–55% relative humidity. Above about 60% you get the familiar symptoms: clammy air, condensation on windows or vents, musty smells, doors and drawers sticking, and conditions that encourage mould and dust mites.

A cheap hygrometer costs very little and turns an argument into a measurement. If the temperature is right and the humidity reads 65%, you have a dehumidification problem, not a cooling problem — and no thermostat setting fixes it.

Why it matters beyond comfort

Persistent indoor humidity is not just unpleasant. It supports mould growth on cool surfaces, feeds dust mites, and lets wood floors and cabinetry take on moisture. It also drives people to over-cool the house chasing comfort they cannot reach, which raises the bill without solving anything.

The real fixes

  • Longer, slower run cycles. This is the heart of it. A variable-speed (inverter) system runs for extended periods at low capacity instead of blasting and stopping, which removes far more moisture. This is the main reason inverter systems suit this climate so well.
  • Correct sizing at replacement. Sized from a load calculation for your actual house — orientation, glazing, insulation, infiltration — not copied from the old label.
  • Fan on AUTO. With the fan on ON, the blower keeps running after the compressor stops and evaporates condensed water off the coil straight back into the house.
  • Seal the envelope. Leaky ducts in a hot attic, gaps around penetrations and poorly sealed doors all pull humid outside air in. Sealing is often cheaper than equipment and helps permanently.
  • A whole-home dehumidifier where it is genuinely needed. For houses that are well sealed but still damp — or seasonal homes sitting empty — a dedicated dehumidifier controls moisture independently of temperature. It is the right answer sometimes, and oversold often.

What about a portable dehumidifier?

A portable unit can help one problem room. It will not condition a whole house, it adds heat to the room it sits in, and someone has to empty it. Useful as a stopgap; not a solution to a systemic issue.

How to tell which problem you have

Run this check on a hot afternoon: note the thermostat setting, the actual room temperature, the humidity reading, and roughly how long the system runs in one cycle.

  • Reaches setpoint fast, cycles off within about ten minutes, humidity above 60% — oversized, short cycling.
  • Runs constantly and never reaches setpoint — undersized, low on charge, dirty coil or duct losses.
  • Reaches setpoint with long steady cycles and humidity sits in the 40s or low 50s — working as it should.

Those three lines separate most cases before anyone opens a panel.
