Airo Service: Salt Air Is Quietly Cutting Years off Coastal AC Systems

Airo Service is advising coastal South Florida homeowners that salt-air corrosion is one of the largest and least understood factors in air conditioning lifespan — and that the most effective countermeasure costs almost nothing.

What salt does

Airborne salt settles on outdoor condensing units and attacks aluminium fins, copper tubing, fan motors and electrical contacts. The result is progressive: fins corrode and lose heat-transfer capacity, contacts degrade, and the compressor works harder to reject the same heat. Efficiency falls before anything visibly fails.

The practical consequence is that two identical systems can have very different service lives depending on how close they sit to the water. Coastal installations frequently reach end of life at the lower end of the 10-to-15-year range typical for this region, while comparable inland units run longer.

The countermeasure

“Salt does not wash off on its own, and Florida rain does not do the job,” said Roman Shatokhin, Founder of Airo Service. “Rinsing a coastal condenser coil on a schedule is the cheapest thing a homeowner can do for the lifespan of that machine, and most people have never been told to do it.”

Airo Service recommends that homes within roughly three miles of the coast have condenser coils rinsed regularly through the year, with a professional coil cleaning at least annually. Rinsing should be done with the power off and with a gentle flow — a pressure washer bends fins and does more harm than the salt.

Equipment choices for coastal homes

For replacements near the water, the company recommends specifying coil coatings and corrosion-resistant hardware. The premium is a fraction of the cost of an early replacement, and the difference in service life on an exposed installation is measured in years rather than months.

Balcony and rooftop installations on coastal towers face the harshest exposure of all, since they combine constant salt with wind-driven spray and limited shelter.
